Why I absolutey disagree with nowadays worship

We live in a world where people want to be amazed. As they go to shopping center, school or church. advertisers work to get people’s attention. As marketer I have to say that its pretty hard. Public is so full of everything. They just ignore normal stuff because it’s not modern or not enough innovation.

The same happens to church. Leaders try to make building comfortable for listening. Pick most interesting themes for sermons. Invite different pastors for the parishioners not to be bored from listening same voice.

And worship? It’s not easy too. How can we get people’s attention? Because you know.. they get pretty boring of simple singing. It has to be fun! Nowadays people’s time is very expensive. And they will not spend it on listening elderly people singing and simple preaching. So we just have to make big scene with decorations and lumiere. Get drums and rock guitars. We have to invite rap, rock or pop singers. Because it’s the only way for people not to get bored. It has to be loud that you will not hear your neighbor. We used to think that when we do that we gather people before scenes and this makes them close to God.

I noticed that nowadays people will not enjoy worship if it’s not

  • professional ( using only professional singers and band players)
  • funny (between songs you have to make them laugh or at least interested)
  • fashion (Singers, players, decorations have to be modern fashioned)

All these are main components of contemporary “worshipping” God.  What??? Who said this? Are we reading same Bible? Because it says:

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. Colossians 3 :16

Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ; Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.

Ephesians 5:19-20

In fear ? I do not see fear of God when a dancer in jeans and tattoos singing rap.  Singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord does not fit into ¨funny¨ or ¨fashion¨.

We have forgotten that worshiping is only about praising God. We have turned it to enjoying music, dancing and clapping hands to one who is extremely talented.

I love singing to God. I love listening spiritual songs which I can call hymns. What I absolutely disagree in nowadays worship is when:

  • singers asks listeners  to rise hands, clapping or scream something.
  • singers tell or show you how its right to worship God
  • singers are too focused in being professional
  • singers dance. Specially women moving their body in seductive way.
  • singers repeat one verse of song 5 or 10 times.
  • singers sing with closed eyes.
  • singers have the only goal is to make people act as they are enjoying songs
  • the only way of singing at church is singing along the worshipping group.

These are many reasons why I love a capella music in church. It allows everyone to participate. It helps people actually listen what the words are. To the ones who disagrees with me I want to say. That all people have a choice. If they wanted to go to a concert they would go to a concert, but they went to church. And we made church to be a concert.

I remember that Bible says about Levites. they were kind of professional singers in church as compare to nowadays. But I dont find anything about being Levites in church services in New Testament! Do we continue to live as in Old Testament? Some people say “we should dance as David did” I remember joy of David and how he danced before God. I’m not in the group of people who judged him. But I feel like people have forgotten that worship is simple singing to praise God. Its is not a tool for attracting people to church. If we live godly life in our everyday life. People will see God through us.

Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.  Matthew 5 :16

This is the best worship we can make on earth. This is the worship God made us for.

  1. People nowadays have forgotten that we gather to worship God in spirit and truth. It is not for us alone, although we do enjoy the fellowship and the building up of our maturity in Christ Jesus. But the first priority in Sunday meetings is to offer God glory and praise…Good post!

  2. I like this! Worship is my favorite part of service. Latley my church has been doing alot of songs especally older song :) accapella. Songs that i havent heard since i was a small child bring me to tears because i now understand them. 29 years on this earth has helped me appreaceate the hymns i heard and sung as a child. I do listen to modern worship artist. But i find that i am drawn closer to God when its just me in the kitchen singing a simple hymn to God. There is nothing like it.

    1. It’s absolutely same with me! I love singing old songs. Some of them give more strength to my soul then many services.

  3. Worship has become a rock concert. I never liked rock, and care for it even less at 8:30 on Sunday morning. My preference has always been the acapella style of the Church of Christ.

  4. OK, so I did manage to find the ‘like’ buttons :-) I suspect I will be using them a lot! You certainly offer a fresh perspective and I agree with most of your points in this post. I also appreciate the nudge to my brain that makes me think about how MY church worships. I love my church, but there is always room to grow, you know?

  5. Dear sister in Christ, Julia.
I am absolutely agree with your thoughts about nowadays worship where we feel not like in the church but feels like in the concert hall. We singing not to glorify God but just for self entertainment. And one more thing I am also disagree get into the church where there is no cross put in their altar wall but we just Seeing a big screen for video. I go with you for this interesting topic, sis. God bless.

  6. I think you make a good point. Worship has become more of a show than actual worship. I know many American Christians who will disagree with you and say that it’s important to “feel” the music and get into it. I think they are wrong.

Sadly, the worship music isn’t even all that great. I wrote about this and how modern worship music is very shallow and many times the lyrics are terrible. I know that in America most people come for the worship. To them it’s the most important part and that’s probably why they now use worship as a way to attract others. I agree with you, worship isn’t for attracting audiences.

    1. I’ve seen people leaving church after they undertand that music is all they want. When the goal is wrong then the relationship with God is not right.

  7. In our church the paster is trying to draw in the younger crowd. After the music they do hear the gospel. We have so many young families here, that when the children go to their programs the church is left half empty. It seems to be working.

    1. To hear you say that brings a great smile to my face. These days, so many people are worrying about the future of the church, but I don’t think it will die out, and it’s always great to be reassured by people saying things like what you have said. 8. Thank you so much for sharing the sadness and depth of this reality and for also visiting my blog. I think it’s terrible when you can’t even hear yourself think because of the bass playing, sometimes so loud that it vibrates in your heart. That is not the movement one wants or needs in their heart. We need the gentle rhythm of our Saviour’s heartbeat. Ours beating in love and in tune with His. God bless.

  9. It’s interesting how worship can differ these days; I was brought up to fold my hands when praying in order to be respectful to God. However, when I see a church service in America on the TV, the congregation is often encouraged to turn their palms towards the Lord as a sign of receiving his forgiveness. If I did this I would think I was being disrespectful, yet to them in America it is normal.

In my church now we have modern songs of worship, which I wasn’t used to before I began going there. The rest of the congregation like these songs, and I’m happy to join in with them, but like you I am a more traditional sort of person. When I’m a vicar when I’m older, I would like my church to be singing traditional hymns, but I know that I have to allow others to express their faith in the way which they wish to.

Our ways of expressing faith may not be what previous generations did, but at least this world is still expressing its faith towards the Lord. Praising God in new ways is better than not praising him at all.

Thanks for your post, it’s been an interesting and enjoyable read, and i’ll be sure to check back for more soon.

    1. Blessings to you, Preacher 2409.

There are over 20 verses in the Bible about lifting our hands to God.

      http://bible.knowing-jesus.com/topics/Lifting-Hands

Aaron, Moses, Solomon and Ezra all raised their hands to the LORD. When David was hiding in the wilderness of Judah he said:

So I will bless You as long as I live. I will lift up my hands in Your name (Psalm 63:4).

      And Paul instructed Timothy:

Therefore I want the men in every place to pray, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and dissension (1 Timothy 2:8).

The act of stretching out your hands is to bless the LORD, and receive His blessings in return. It is a beautiful act of worship.

We lift up our heart and hands toward God in heaven (Lamentations 3:41).

      Blessed be His name.

    2. Actually, preacher 2409 in the Old statement Moses shows us to raise our hands in prayer. It is how the ancient Israelites worshipped Jeovah! The same with music and dancing David danced before the Lord. Now, having said that I also understand the difference between true worship and a show (I was asked to leave a church because the lyrics were dishonoring to God and the PowerPoint had me ducking flying things and seeing things. The worship leader never answered my questions only had me meet with elder and when I was told “we must reach the next generation at all costs and since your over 40 and on the downside of life so please don’t return” I will admit I was floored. True worship whether the hymns of old or current music should 1st and foremost bring honor to Father, Son, Holy Spirit.

Scripture does express music of clapping and dancing both.

      1. I agree; when I said “previous generations”, I was thinking of grandparents etc. who were brought up to worship different than we do today; in that space of time things have changed quite alot.

  10. When Christ is not supreme, when He is not the most cherished above all else, then everything else simply becomes humanistic and to varying degrees narcissistic. Keep your focus on Him. Peace and blessings sister!

  11. Reblogged this on the rip[ple] effect and commented:
It is good to hear these observations about how worship is perceived. I have served in churches from 75 to 7000 people and the level of talent has been extremely wide. I have gone through phases of disappointment with gigantic production, and also a lack of preparation. Whatever we observe in the congregation, I try to think of the hearts of the worshipers on the platform. Yes there are a few “performers” in there, but mostly everyday people who just love to use their gifts for Jesus. One issue is the bigger the church the bigger the expectation for something, well….big! This is a very thoughtful piece, and not to be ignored

  12. Julia,
This has been on my mind lately.
I grew up attending a Lutheran Church. I remember singing & loving the hymns. The only instrument used was an organ & the congregation voices rise, up to heaven like a perfumed incense.

I don’t want to negate what the contemporary churches are doing. There are some folks who they ARE reaching. But, raising the hands during singing is now beginning to trouble me.
I guess I’m feeling like I need to meat than milk….
